Athletic Trainers are Allied Health Care providers who work with the physically active in many settings, including high schools, colleges, clinics, professional sports, industrial settings, and everything in between. Certified Athletic Trainers are knowledgeable in the domains of injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care. Often, athletic trainers are the first on the scene when injuries occur and must have the ability to quickly assess injuries/illnesses and provide immediate care.
Athletic trainers work under the discretion and supervision of a physician, as well as other health care providers (Physical therapists, strength & conditioning coaches, etc). This team works cooperatively to provide the best care for their athletes.
Athletic trainers make certian they educate each individual they work with. Whether it is on prevention of injuries, explaining the nature of a specific injury one may be recovering from, or walking an athlete through rehabilitation, education is an important part of the job.
Athletic training is a very unique profession, with an ever-changing daily schedule. Personally, I love the "unknown"; I come to work every day never knowing what to expect!
"Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training curriculum. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through clinical education experiences" (NATA.org).
